Two Years Ago Today
One of the few things I like about Facebook is that every now and then it reminds me of what I was doing a year or two ago, on the present day. Before I had this blog, I still documented my trips as photo-journals. The below photos are from two years ago, 2016, up near Ely, Minnesota. Even though this is a trip I've made many times since, I still find these photos interesting and relevant to my current adventures. Enjoy!
The woods were dead quiet. I could hear wolves miles away.
I think this is called, "Bindweed." It's vine-like and it creeps across the ground. Nature's tripwire.
A tall Red Pine.
A natural shelter created by a fallen spruce.
Bunchberry. Lacking in flavor but nutritious and abundant.
The forest floor was covered with them.
Plenty of blueberries too.
With the spines removed, thistle stalks can be eaten like a vegetable.
Batoning some wood for a small fire.
Scraping up some Birch bark dust to take a spark. Pictured: a Mora Companion knife and a Light My Fire Swedish fire steel.
A quick supper: Beef ramen, blueberries and an MRE lemon iced tea.
Boiling water on a pop-can alcohol stove. Eventually, I'll create a post about how to make one of these.
Dinner's Ready: I carved out some quick chopsticks, then added Sweet Fern for extra flavor.
My stuff. Here's what accompanied me that day.
Last but not least, a creepy selfie.
Thanks for comin' along!
